The Urban Works Agency, supported by a NSF Grant to encourage Science in the Studio, is pleased to present a guest lecture by ARUP’s geologist and geotechnical engineer, Nik Sokol.

Nik Sokol is an associate tunnel / geological engineer and project manager at the multidisciplinary engineering firm Arup. Educated in geology, mining engineering and the fine arts, Nik specializes in the planning, design and construction oversight of underground projects in urban environments with an emphasis on quality, constructability and safety. Nik has a diverse skill set refined during his 15 years of experience working on global infrastructure and development projects and such as the Second Avenue Subway, No. 7 Line Extension, East Side Access and World Trade Center reconstruction in New York City, the Sydney Opera House VAPS project and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Petawatt Facility. Nik’s hands on experience includes a variety of tunnel excavation methods in a broad range of ground conditions. His extensive field experience allows him to serve as a liaison between designers, construction management teams and contractors to facilitate efficient resolution of key issues during construction. Nik is the Resident Geologist Emeritus of The City Reliquary Museum in Brooklyn.
