Bay Area academics, students, and practitioners will test and define elements of a shared curriculum for teaching the planning and design of resilience, specifically such that it reflects the challenges and resources in the Bay Area.
Our goal is to create a framework that can be used by any academic institution while working to create solutions to real problems, fine-tune the understanding of resilience, and meet great people in the field.
This two-day event features a mix of lectures, panel discussions and workshops, and will include practitioners and thought leaders from the fields of architecture, planning, design, engineering, technology, and the social and physical sciences — a can’t-miss for those interested in an overview of how design can help build resilience.
Bay Area collaborators include individuals representing California College of the Arts, San Jose State University, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Stanford, and San Francisco State University.
This event will lead up to the 2017 Bay Area Resilient by Design Challenge.
About RBD U
Resilience by Design University gives the next generation of architects, landscape architects, urban designers, and planners the tools to embrace principles of resilience as a central tenet of design. A community of academic and design professionals involved in the Rebuild by Design competition have united to develop an open-sourced curriculum for a Fundamentals Course.
About the Bay Area Resilience Design Competition
The Challenge, modeled after the success of the Rebuild by Design competition in the Hurricane Sandy region, will invite global design experts to collaborate with community leaders, government agencies, and the private sector to develop visionary, realistic and implementable built solutions to respond to the effects of rising sea levels on Bay Area neighborhoods, physical environment, and infrastructure.
The Challenge will capture the creativity, imagination, and entrepreneurship of the Bay Area to make a lasting impact on its shared future.
Organizers:
Rebuild by Design University, Institute for Public Knowledge at NYU, Penn Design, CCA Architecture and the Urban Works Agency, in partnership with the Climate Readiness Institute and San Jose State University.
